The 26th Annual River Raft Race. We have a date, so get your rafts ready. The River Raft Race enters it’s 26th year as a shining example of the best of the Nature Coast.
Throughout the years, the Raft Race was quite the party, it still is. It has become an event that truly reflects the values of the majority of people here in Citrus County. Last years race, which featured great rafts in two separate categories, mechanical and non-mechanical, was well attended.
The tree lined streets between MacRaes and Homosassa Riverside Resort were lined with vendors. Kids played all day at the Kid Zone. Those wanting quiet dining filled the restaurants of the Homosassa Riverside Resort. Revelers and the hardcore party animals enjoyed the fun, sun and live music at MacRaes. There was something for everyone.
The proudest moment of the day came when we crowned the first ever Raft Race King and Queen. Each contestant “ran” for the honor by collecting donations for local charity organizations. By the time winners were given their crown and sash, over $139,000 had been raised for local charities. That staggering amount spoke volumes to the generosity of our community and the hard work of each contestant.
The transition of The Raft Race was complete. No arrests for the entire day, families had fun and local charity benefited. The race itself will always be the centerpiece of Raft Race Day. Each winner of each category won $500, with $250 and $100 going to second and third place. Those prizes were awarded, along with a plaque, in both the mechanical and non-mechanically enhanced raft categories. Not a bad pay-off for a day on the river.
This year, we will do it again…the Kid Zone, vendor village and The Raft Race. Cash will be awarded, fun will be had. Those who want to party, will do so. Those who want to bring their families or church groups will have more than ample place to enjoy the event. The River Raft Race has become the one event in the county that holds something fun for every segment of our community.
The 26th Annual River Raft Race will be held Saturday September 13th on the river in Old Homosassa.
