Stitches and Stories: Quilts from Citrus County

New Traveling exhibition, Stitches and Stories: Quilts from Citrus County opens on Thursday, September 6th

INVERNESS – – The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum is proud to present a new exhibition titled: Stitches and Stories. This 2018 show opens on September 6th and will be on display through November 13th. The exhibit features many hand-crafted and machine-made contemporary and vintage quilts, ranging from large wall hangings to bed quilts.

Quilts and quilt making are a timeless ancient craft, which have been made for functional as well as self-expression. Two particularly interest…ing quilts were part of the Florida Quilt Heritage Project, 1986, sponsored by the Florida Museum of History in Tallahassee and featured in Charlotte Allen Williams’ 1992 book titled: Florida Quilts. The goal of the project and the results of the book included discovering, documenting, and preserving the history of Florida as expressed through the life and the times of the quilt makers.

Citrus County took the challenge and two centennial quilts were made, one for Crystal River and one for the county as a whole, since in 1987 the county would have been 100 years of age. These quilts along with many more will be on display through mid-November.

Admission to the show is free, and free parking is available around the square or in the large parking lot to the southeast of Courthouse Square Information about the Museum may be found at
