Motown Week: Smokey Robinson Is Your Boy

Motown week is upon us. Smokey Robinson is awesome, although his blue eyes creep me out. On to the show.

  • "Matt Girauldo" - is the man. I've loved this guy since Hollywood Week and he continues to impress. The sound of his voice and the connection with the piano is great.

  • "Two First Names" Kris Allen - Was good. A little plain. Nothing too sparky. But definitely good. I think he'll end up being one of these guys who make it to the top 4 and then are forced out, not because of a bad week, but because competition is just too intense.

  • "Scotty Wonder" is insane for not singing Stevie Wonder. How cool would that have been? Instead he did another goofy song. Every week it's a goofy song for this guy. I wish he would not do that because he's so impressive to watch do his thing, but his sense of... what's good, is not good.

  • "Meg Enjoy" has such a cool voice. Love that sound. It's like that Adele/Duffy/British chick thing. Dig the tattoo. But like Scotty, she seems to have no idea what song to sing and she does often come off as uhhh... I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO ON THIS STAGE!

  • "Anoop Dogg" - Makes me want to take a nap. I liked him better when he was singing "Beat It" and "My Prerogative" but the judges hate that. The softer side of Anoop makes me sleepy. He may be in the bottom three.

  • "Big Boy" Michael Sarver - better not be too proud to beg not to go home. I think he's toast. Two bad weeks - we've seen that he is at a brick wall that he's not getting over. Sorry dude.

  • Little Circle - should have blown us away in Motown week. Instead, it was just ok. I was excited to see her do her thing but was left feeling ripped off. It was ok, but I just expected more.

  • "Freak Show" Adam Lambert - is your next American Idol. The game is over, folks. Cancel Christmas. This guy is miles beyond the other contestants. It isn't even close. How do you go from that freaky, creepy, yet awesome performance last week to this beautiful, soft, emotional performance this week? He's incredible.

  • Gokey - is a loser for not listening to Smokey Robinson. That's all I was thinking the whole time. Smokey, THE MAN, told you how to sing the song. Told you to sing the background vocals yourself. Even says he's taking his advice. Then comes out and does the opposite. At that point, I can't even focus on his odd performance. Too busy wondering why he thinks his sense is better than Smokey's.

  • "Big Red" Allison Iraheta - is so awesome. She will be top 4. She could be the runner up to this whole thing. I love that rock chick thing and she has this true latin attitude thing going on that is really cool to see make its way into every song.

And that's that. Bottom three will likely be Sarver, Anoop, and Megan. With Roughneck Sarver going home. Scotty might be in there in place of Anoop, but we'll see tonight.

    American Idol: Yee Haw!
    Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Happy they get Country Week out of the way as fast as possible. Quick review:

  • "Roughneck Mike" Michael Sarver: was rapping. His smile is creepy.

  • "Big Red" Allison Iraheta: was good, but I wish she would have put her rock chick edge on one of these country songs. Could have done something cool.

  • "Two First Names" Kris Allen: is the man. Do like him better with the guitar doing the smooth-dude-singing-to-the-ladies thing. But this definitely worked well.

  • "Real Name IS a Nick Name" Lil Rounds: was not great. Like when you're a kid and you think you can swim in the deep end. She needed to convert country to R&B. That would have been awesome.

  • Broadway Boy"Freak Show" Adam Lambert: is a freak. And that is awesome. I am quite the fan of anything odd, quirky, freaky, or downright strange. It was off the charts weird, but it was absolutely entertaining. This guy is the real deal.

  • "Scotty Wonder" Scott MacIntyre: is starting to lose steam. The sound of his voice rocks. I'm fascinated watching him but his songs are lame and boring.

  • "Jumbo Head" Alexis Grace: is going home. Jolene makes my ears hurt.

  • "Gokey" Danny Gokey: has golden pipes. Continues to do his thing. And that thing is getting a bit stale. The whole inspirational-songs-about-being-strong thing is starting to wear me out.

  • "Anoop Dogg" Anoop Desai" could go home. Great comeback, but the damage may be done. He's just not a very believable star, despite his charisma and great voice.

  • "Name Changer" Megan Joy Corkrey: rocked despite her illness. If her solid performance doesn't get her through, that smoking outfit will. What's up with her dropping the last name?

  • Girauldo" Matt Giraud: is probably my favorite. The sound of his voice is very good. Guy sings with his soul and that comes through on a record. Definitely in the top 4. And he was a wild card.

So that's that. I expect Jumbo Head Alexis to go home tonight. Wouldn't be shocked if one of the less memorable contestants go home. Even though they were good, compared to the other smashes, I worry about Anoop and Kris.

    The Top 12!!!! err... 13
    Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Michael Jackson couldn't mentor the kids this week because... Can you actually hear Ryan Seacrest saying "and mentoring the kids this week... showing them a thing or two, passing on his... experience... Michael Jackson"

Yeah, creepy. Plus I don't even know if his face can touch the air. I think it may in fact melt off. Which you think would be a huge ratings booster for Idol and HUGE sales for his newly announced concert series! But hey... I just have ideas.

One idea I have is that Adam Lambert - BROADWAY BOY, is in fact the man. He is the guy I see starting a revolution with that style of his. That is like, go an buy a poster and put it up in the garage kind of coolness. I totally see a brand developing here.

Gokey is awesome too, but in a Josh Groban sort of way. That's a compliment... But by the analogy, we're comparing Josh Groban and this rocked out ecentric screamy kinda dude. He's current. Groban leans towards an an older softer style. Still... two incredible forces this year.

Big Red Allison is sick! Love the rock chick thing. Don't know why she made the awkard "it's not like I'm cutting" comment but it came of as uhhhh.... what the heck did she just say?

Everyone else was kinda blah for me. Like Two First Names Kris Allan. Princess Jasmine has talent, but I don't think she has a clue how to use it.

Anoop Dog is done for. If they're voting two off, expect either Jorge or Alexis to go. Something weird is going to happen tonight because... I mean it's not really fair to Alexis.

Her number was supposed to be 866-IDOLS-13, but since this is the first time they've had a top 13... They came to find out that IDOLS-13 was a very bad number you'd never want the American Idol audience calling...

So they give her the out of sequence number 866-IDOLS-36. And she wasn't that great either so I don't expect her to get many votes and she will likely lose votes due to the phone number mix up.

So something weird is definitely going to happen tonight. I do have to wonder just how many people accidently called the wrong number.

    Wild Card: Breaking The Rules!
    Friday, March 6, 2009

Oh those bad boys! Those judges do what they want! Who needs rules? They can change it as they go! The top 36 became the top 37 (sort of) when the two jumbo dudes made it in! The top 12 became... The Top 13.

I'm liking this. Now we don't have to wonder if they just do what they want on the show. Now they just lay it right out there for us. They pick whoever they want, throw them on the show and then we get to "choose" the next American Idol.

Now how are we ever supposed to look at these four hand picked American Idol Wildcard contestants and look at them as AMERICA's picks... or The Judges' pics?

    Wrong!
    Thursday, March 5, 2009

Another 2-3 night for me. But I gotta say it... What is wrong with the people who vote on American Idol? Ju'Not was absolutely awesome. That Jorge dude was lame. Looks like the illigitmate child on Meet The Parents (or was that Meet The Fockers?)

Regardless - People voted because he cried. "I'm so emotional I can't even think in English" is very cute. Tugs on the heart strings. But his performance was not that great and nowhere near as good as Ju'Not's.

And what is going on with the wild card pics? At least 3 of those people are straight up terrible. Tatiana??? The insane-constantly-freaking out-making unnatural noises-Sponge Bob laughing-girl? Does anyone think Anoop Dawg is the next American Idol? Where is Jackie Tohn? Norman Gentle?

As a matter of fact... Just because they didn't include Norman Gentle in the Wild Card episode, I will be boycotting the show. I think the show is ruined with out him. He could have went all the way. He was the next American Idol. They failed us.

    RIP Norman Gentle.

    Idol Predictions
    Wednesday, March 4, 2009

My predictions for this week's batch of contestants on American Idol:

Ju'not Joyner - "Hey There Delilah" - Plain White T's
Lil Rounds - "Be Without You" - Mary J. Blige
Scott Macintyre - "Mandolin Rain" - Bruce Hornsby and The Range

Would not be shocked if Kendall Beard fights her way into the top 3.

So far - my record is pretty good. I've nailed 4 out of the current top 6. I incorrectly guessed Jackie Tohn and Norman Gentle... Who I still think could make it wild card week.

    That's it. We shall see.
