American Idol: Two Sets of Rules
Wednesday, April 29, 2009

There is a set of rules for the contestants on American Idol. There is a second, more special, much cooler set of rules for Adam Lambert.

Last night, the idea of having as "Rat Pack" theme was straight up bizarre. Having Jamie Foxx as the mentor for Rat Pack week was even more bizarre. Allowing Adam Lambert to sing Michael Buble's "Feeling Good", a song from 2005, was the most bizarre.

Everyone knows you take a risk singing an older song. So how can it be fair to the other contestants, like Matt for instance, doing a song from 1937?!

There are two sets of rules. Even if one tried to argue that the song was fair game because it's in the style of big band, I would argue that, by Ryan Seacrest's very definition of the theme, the song is not an American Standard. Feel me?

But I have to admit: I love Michael Buble. I love that song. And I loved Adam's version, despite the legitimacy of him signing it on the show, it rocked. I would buy it iTunes, for sure.

So who's going home? Big Red Allison or Poor Man's Timberlake Matt. I'm thinking Matt's on his way... On his way... Home, sweet home. Back to the dueling pianos.

Idol: Sad But True
Thursday, April 9, 2009

It was Scotty Wonder's time. Let's face it - if this were a contest for the most inspiring person in the world, Scott could be your winnter. I would even go as far as saying Scotty may in fact be THE MOST talented person on that stage. I mean come on, could you play piano and guitar blind? Who knows what other instruments he plays.

But it's a singing contest. And his singing is really... not that great. His song choices are actually really bad. You almost feel guilty for not voting for the guy. But facts are facts. It's over, Scotty.

On a second note, it doesn't matter how well Anoop does next week. Nothing can save him. He will be going home next week.

Idol Top 8: Songs From The Year They Were Born
Wednesday, April 8, 2009

How about they bring people on to sing songs from the year they died? I think it would be a hit. On to the show!

Was Ricky Minor on vacation this week? I can honestly say that the music on every song was plain boring and horrific. What's with all the horns? It was all bad but at least it was consistent. Not a good week.

Gokey - is such a great singer, but this was so lame. He is very much like David Archuletta; he can only sing one type of song. A slow emotional ballad. Jesus Take The Wheel. What Hurts The Most. He is awkward when he tries to sing anything else.

"Two First Names" Kris Allen - was all bad. Maybe the worst arrangement of the night and he wasn't really playing guitar! What a fake. It was a prop. I swear he was NOT making music with that guitar. He was just playing it. I don't think he even had a cable plugged into it. Playing in the crowd... What a goof.

Little Circle - put me to sleep. After three boring performances I was ready for nap time. It has become clear that Lil is not the artist we thought she was. The Mary J. Blige performance was so good, but it was a false sense of talent. THAT performance was really good. Week after week, she is not.

Anoop Dogg - was off the hook good. When Ryan said he was doing True Colors I was seriously going to give up and turn the TV off because I literally couldn't take anymore. Luckily, the stripped down soulful thing worked. Sounded like a song we'd play on the radio today. Nicely done, Anoopy.

Scotty Wonder - It may be over Johnny. The guitar was cool. The singing was really bad. The song was really bad. 1985 and he picks... Survivor? What the hay? The Search? Scott is insanely talented, but he has no idea what good music is. He may be done for.

Big Red Allison - is so good. I love everything she does. Such a big fan. I think she will be at least, top 3. But the judges are right. She keeps hitting the bottom 3 because she has no personality. People don't remember her. She needs to entertain even when she is not singing. Find those moments.

Matt Giraud - is probably my personal favorite. I really enjoy everything he does, even the ones the judges hate. I was a little concerned with him doing Stevie Wonder. I wondered if maybe he stole Scott's song and that's why he ended up doing that terrible Survivor song.

Freak Show Adam - is so good it's shocking. He is so good that I hope Matt or Allison beats him so it'll be even more shocking. He's going to be a huge star no matter if he wins or not.

Overall a really boring show. My prediction for the bottom 3:

Scott. Lil Rounds. Kris Allen.

Lil Rounds or Scott. Probably Scott going home. Even though he is a million times better than Lil. But neither are good enough to hang with the rest.

Idol: Sing Whatever Week
Wednesday, April 1, 2009

So it's Sing Whatever Week. These guys have the ultimate chance, no excuses, no restrictions. Pick your song and make your moment. And sadly, most of them blew it.

  • Anoop Dawg - is on his way... on his way... home sweet home. There is nothing he can sing that isn't strange and awkward. Sorry dude, it doesn't work.

  • Meg Enjoy - has such a weird, quirky, yet cool sounding voice. I love her voice. However, that's about it. Her song choice was, like Simon said, indulgent. Her doing that odd song was only cool to HER. She should be gone but she'll likely survive another week on looks.

  • Gokey - is phenomenal. What more can you say? My only worry is that I hope he doesn't stay in this theme of these ultra depressing songs. Seems like anything other than a "Jesus Take The Wheel" or a "What Hurts The Most" doesn't work for him.

  • Big Red Allison - saw the worst of the judges last night. Seriously. The judges were absolutely moronic. All they could do was talk about her dress. It's a singing competition. Simon, on a side note, noted she shouted. That's how she sings ALL of her songs and they love it every other week. Here's the deal: Allison doing No Doubt was awesome. Her version was awesome. Her vocal was awesome. The guitar was awesome. And her dress was pretty hideous. But at least she's being herself which, the judges tell everyone to do. Can't win.

  • Scotty Wonder - finally had a good week. But his time is running out. His idea of what is good music is not in sync with the rest of the world. He has horrible pop sensibility. He has loads of talent. But he's just disconnected with what is good.

  • Matt Girauldo - was a weird one for me. I get why they hated it. But I enjoy this song and I appreciated his version of it. My bias on this song probably doesn't put me in a good position to judge this. I like The Fray and I'm a fan of Matt's. Heck, we have the same name. I MUST LIKE IT. But yeah... reluctantly, I say it was not a good song choice.

  • Little Circle - makes me sleepy. She is so boring. Her song choices are always bad. How cool, and smart, would it have been for her to sing Leona Lewis?

  • Freaky Show Adam - is in fact, a complete freak show. How can this guy possibly make, "Play That Funky Music" awesome? It's so weird. The show is over and Adam's won. It's like watching a movie where you already know the ending.

  • Two First Names Kris Allan - was good but I didn't get it. I thought his performance was awesome but why didn't he get hit with the same Megan Joy indulgence comment? I've never even heard of that song or Bill Withers. Yet because he did it well, it wasn't indulgent? It doesn't make sense. It was good but I just don't understand why he can sing an obscure song and be great and when others do it they are not. He was good though.

Who will be in the bottom three? This is tough. With websites like votefortheworst.com messing with the results, it can be tricky. Who saw Scott or Matt going in the bottom three last week? However this week, my guess...

    Anoop. Megan. Matt.

Anoop Dawg going home where he can go back to singing Usher in the shower.
